Hristo Rachev is a classically trained musician with broad interests in contemporary music culture and technologies. He is also teacher with more than 10 years of experience and co-founder of Sound Ninja Music Academy. He is also known by his pseudonym Monk, inspired by the radical approach to music of the legendary Thelonious Monk.
As a pianist Hristo has played numerous solo, orchestral and chamber concerts in Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. He also received prestigious awards from national and international piano competitions. He has written music for two dance performances and a theatre piece before he “converted” to electronic music.
Strongly influenced by jazz and electronic underground culture he underwent a journey through producing and playing genres like downtempo, trip-hop, drum & bass, dubstep and EDM. As a DJ he played alongside artists like Lenzman, Ragga Twins, Caspa, 16 Bit, Youngsta and many others. He was also the founder of the first Bulgarian weekly radio show dedicated to drum & bass and dubstep culture called ‘Drum Bassment’ on Alpha Radio.
Currently Hristo is teaching full time at Sound Ninja Music Academy and also developing contemporary music courses for different schools and organisations.
